Grant Offers Comfort to Hospice Patients

Patients at St Richard’s Hospice are able to benefit from new in-house treatment following a generous gift from The Friends of Pershore Hospital.

The Friends of Pershore Hospital have awarded St Richard’s Hospice a grant of £7,280 to fund an ultrasound scanner so that patients can undergo procedures at the hospice rather than having to travel to hospital.

The new equipment will enable the hospice to offer diagnostic scans to patients attending Day Hospice and out-patient clinics as well as those in the In-patient Unit, and will reduce the time taken for diagnosis and treatment.

Mrs Trish Freeman, Chairman of the Friends of Pershore Hospital, said; “We are delighted to be able to award this grant. Our constitution enables us to make donations such as this to organisations other than Pershore Hospital if the project would benefit Pershore patients.”

Mr Michael Amies, Vice-Chair added; “We are pleased to hear that the scanner is already in use and is helping the hospice to relieve patients’ symptoms quickly.”

Dr James Kerton, Specialist Palliative Care Doctor at St Richard’s Hospice, said; “We are very grateful to the Friends of Pershore Hospital for this grant. Previously, very ill patients had to travel to Worcestershire Royal Hospital nearby to have a diagnostic ultrasound scan, at a time when moving can be painful and distressing for them and for their loved ones. Having an ultrasound scanner located here at the hospice means that we can determine the cause of their discomfort more quickly and offer appropriate treatment. This is of particular benefit to patients who may be very frail and too ill to travel to hospital.”
