Education RoomEducation is an essential part of the services provided by the hospice as outlined in the NICE Guidelines. The Education and Resource Centre (the Centre) is a major provider of palliative care education across Worcestershire and surrounding regions. The Centre provides dedicated facilities that can be accessed by health professionals from across the county.

Our aim is to provide professional development opportunities for health practitioners working directly or indirectly in palliative care. We achieve this by providing an innovative range of accredited courses, specialist study days and flexible learning approaches. Learning may take place at the Hospice or in the student’s workplace.

We also offer clinical placements for health care professionals to support professional development, and for students undertaking nursing and medical courses within local universities. The Centre works collaboratively with the University of Worcester, local primary care and acute trusts, the independent sector and the 3 Counties Cancer Network.

Learning in the Centre is supported by a specialist palliative care library which, in addition to books and other learning resources, has palliative care journals, access to computers and the internet. Personal tutorial support is also available on request.

We aim to:

  • raise clinical competence in palliative care by directly influencing knowledge, skills and attitudes of professionals and carers;
  • improve the care of people with a life limiting illness;
  • develop and provide educational programmes about aspects of specialist palliative care that meet the clinical needs of local service providers;
  • provide a multi-professional approach to palliative care education;
  • act as a resource of specialist and generalist palliative care information for health and social care professionals, patients and carers;
  • provide the environment, facilities, resources and learning materials to enhance knowledge of palliative care.
