Social work
Living with a life limiting illness can affect many areas of a person’s life, including concerns about finance, relationships and many other practical problems. These problems often arise as a person’s social network struggles to adapt. Having the opportunity to talk about these concerns is often the gateway to a greater acceptance of their situation as well as being a key point where further specialist support and advice is accessed. The Palliative Care Social Worker at St Richard’s can provide specialist support and advice for patients, family, friends and carers alike. In addition, when it becomes appropriate for a patient to be discharged from the In-patient Unit, help with accessing community care services, housing departments and social services is also possible.
