St Richard's depends on volunteers in almost all of its work to fulfil its goal of providing free care to patients and support to their families.
We are looking for volunteers to join us wherever they are able to
- We are flexible and happy for people to volunteer on a regular or occasional basis
- We have many different roles (see Join our volunteer team) reflecting volunteers' individual skills, interests and availability. The Hospice is open 365 days a year, with volunteers helping at some time every day.
Role: Day Hospice Helpers
Can you help in Day Hospice on a Monday?
A number of out-patient clinics are held on Mondays, in particular our renal clinic, and volunteers are urgently needed to support the patients who attend.
Role: Day Hospice Hosts
We are also planning to start a social group who would meet once a month on a Saturday to give Patients , who are in less need of clinical input, the chance to socialise with their peers. Volunteers are needed to act as hosts in day Hospice. Perhaps you work or study and can only volunteer at weekends; this would be a wonderful opportunity to support patient care.
Role: Weekend Evening Receptionists.
From this autumn it is planned to expand the Receptionist role to include the 4.30 to 8pm shift on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays; the number of visitors at this time is increasing and putting too much strain on IPU staff. Perhaps you already volunteer on Reception or would like to, can you help fill these slots?
Role: St Richard’s Hospice Community Volunteers
Community Volunteers. St Richard’s Hospice Community Volunteers is a scheme being launched to help those who have life threatening illnesses and who want to remain at home. It will provide practical help and in turn allow them to spend quality time with their friends and family. Our Hospice Community Volunteers are people who are able to give around two hours a week to offer practical help and social contact.
You can Help. You can help neighbours in need. Offering a small amount of your time will make a real difference to patients and their families and friends when they need it most. No specific skills are required – just the ability to get on with people and a desire to help. St Richard’s Hospice will provide training and offer support whenever needed.
Assistance. As a Community Volunteer you will only be asked to provide help to someone who lives near to you and won’t be required to help with anything medical or related to personal hygiene. All we ask is that you are aged over 18 and live within the catchment area of St Richard’s Hospice. Training will start in June 2013.
If you are interested in this new volunteering role please complete the on-line application form or if you would like to know more contact Thelma Wingfield, Community Volunteers Scheme Co-ordinator on 01905 763963 or email: CommunityVolunteers@strichards.org.uk
Role: Bereavement Support
Bereavement Support, South Worcestershire is a new bereavement service commissioned by The South Worcestershire Clinical Commissioning Group and hosted by St Richard's Hospice.
The service is available to anyone registered with a south Worcestershire medical practice, who has experienced the death of someone close to them. Due to the wide range of bereavement that we cover, we are working in a very fast paced environment with very distressed individuals. We are looking for volunteers who would like to work with us and can cope with strong expressions of distress and grief, and have the ability to listen, accept other people and be non-judgemental. The role will involve telephone advice, 1-to-1 support and some group work. Training courses and regular supervision are available to progress your skills.
Please contact Gareth Vaughan or Jane Jackson on 01905 760934 for more details.
Role: Family Support Volunteer
Currently there are 27 trained FSWs who support families pre and post-death on a one to one basis and in groups. New members for the team will be recruited in January 2013. Specific skills will be required in particular having no fear of expressions of distress and grief, an ability to listen and accept other people and to be non-judgemental. To be considered for this role you will need to gain experience in patient led areas and to have completed Part 1 listening Skills. The latter can be reserved via Education.
Role: Volunteer Counsellors
Student Placement (Voluntary)
we are offering placements for students who are currently studying on a recognised course for a counselling qualification.
Qualified Counsellors (Voluntary)
We are looking for qualified counsellors who are trained to at least level 5 and are BACP accredited or equivalent or working towards this qualification, which will need to be evidenced.
You will need to have sufficient time available to see a minimum of 2 clients for one-to-one counselling sessions per week.
Experience of working with bereaved clients is preferable but not essential as training can be provided.
Due to the specialist nature of this client work, the recruitment of students and counsellors will be a carefully assessed process.
If you are interested in either of the above roles, please contact Anne Tomkins on 01905 763963 ext. 2072 or email@example.com or Wendy Platt on 01905 760934 ext. 2100 or WPlatt@strichards.org.uk
The deadline for applications is 16th August 2013. Interview dates to be confirmed
Role: Support Group Host/Hostess
There are a number of patient and carer support groups that regularly meet at the Hospice. They happen during the day or in the evening. If you would like to assist as a host/hostess during these meetings please contact Libby Harris.
We are currently in need of additional car drivers and minibus drivers to transport patients to and from the Day Hospice.
Role: Minibus Escorts
Another reminder that there is an urgent need for people to accompany the minibus drivers to bring in patients for the Day Hospice. What is required is to assist them to the minibus; help them settle in the bus; help them during the journey if required and to assist with them into the Hospice. While a regular commitment would be best, being able to provide occasional help would also be very valuable. Why not accompany a minibus to help make up your mind?
Role: Volunteers needed in St Richard's Laundry
We are looking for volunteers to work in the laundry at the Hospice on a Friday.
If we get several offers of help it could be once a month or once a fortnight. It would be for 3 hours preferably from 10 – 1 pm but it could be a bit earlier or a bit later.
If you are interested, please contact Libby Harris Volunteer Services Coordinator at the Hospice, 01905 763963 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
