A year of fundraising events at Droitwich Golf Club has raised over £8,000 for St Richard’s Hospice, the Joint Captains’ Charity for 2014.
The club’s men, ladies and senior members held a series of fundraising events to raise money for the hospice, including raffles, jumble sales and bridge drives. More unusual fundraising activities included donations in lieu of sending Christmas cards, selling home grown vegetables and a sale of clothes hangers by the club’s pro-shop.
The annual Captain’s charity golf day, followed by a charity ball, made a significant contribution to the total raised, with an auction of donated prizes. Many prizes were donated by other local golf clubs and the ball was supported by Barclays Bank, which offered matched funding.
The hospice, named after Droitwich saint Richard de Wyche, has been offering compassionate care to local patients with life-threatening illnesses and supporting their families since 1984. Last year the hospice’s specialist nurses cared for 118 patients from the Droitwich area in their own homes, and 39 in the hospice’s specialist In-patient Unit, while the Family Support Team offered bereavement support and counselling to their loved ones.
Richard Hardy, Men’s Captain, said; “St Richard’s Hospice is close to my family’s hearts after we received such amazing care from them when my father-in-law was ill. It seemed only right to choose them to be my charity during my year as Captain and I would like to thank everyone who helped us raise this money. I am delighted that this gift will help the hospice continue to care for those who need them.”
Alison Parkes, Senior Fundraiser at St Richard’s Hospice, said; “We really appreciate the Captains’ support for St Richard’s and are really grateful for this donation. It costs £475 to provide a day’s care for a patient with life-threatening illnesses in our In-patient Unit, which has 17 beds. This donation will fund the whole unit for a day.”
