Christmas at St Richard’s

Patients at St Richard’s Hospice in Worcester are getting into the festive spirit.

We hold Christmas parties for our Day Hospice patients throughout December, making it a special event with lots of love, laughter and care among people who have become friends with shared experiences of living with a life-threatening illness.  The trees are decorated, the carols playing, and the pre-lunch drinks trolley rolled in! The day’s festivities are crowned by the Christmas lunch, cooked in house by our catering team and served by our wonderful staff and volunteers. Our patients say they hugely enjoy it!

We will also be dishing up delicious dinners for our Dragonfly Group at their Christmas party. This group is for bereaved children, young people and their parent or carer and we go all out to give them a party to bring a smile to their faces. They will all be keeping a look out for a much-anticipated visit from Father Christmas.

As well as our Day Hospice patients, we also serve Christmas lunches to patients and families in our In-patient Unit. Most of us see Christmas as a time for celebrating and being together with our families but when a member of your family is nearing the end of their life, and the family is facing what may be their last Christmas together, it becomes even more important.

Our goal is to bring peace, comfort and dignity to every patient we see, every day of the year. But we know that Christmas is an especially difficult and emotional time. We always make a huge effort to make the day as positive and happy as we can for our patients and their families who are here with us over Christmas.

The award-winning garden centre Webbs Garden Centre has delivered large and small fresh trees and to deck the halls, Day Hospice, Snowdrop Centre and In-patient bedrooms of the hospice at Wildwood Drive. Patients, staff and volunteers set straight to decorating the trees when they arrived, giving the hospice a homely festive feel.
