Two University of Worcester students have donated a Christmas present with a difference to St Richard’s Hospice – their time and skills to create a new festive fundraising film.
Indy Takhar and Tom Robinson, who are both studying digital film production, have created a three minute video urging supporters to help fund the St Richard’s Hospice at Home team care for patients and families over Christmas.
The film is the key focus of the St Richard’s online Christmas appeal via the Crowdfunder website.
The film features Ian Thompson who talks about how the Hospice at Home team made a difference to the care of his wife, Wendy, a maths teacher at Nunnery Wood School in Worcester for 25 years.
“Wendy was very much loved by everybody. She was a wonderful person,” said Ian, who lives in Hanley Swan. “It was midnight by the time Wendy got home from hospital. She needed quite a lot of assistance and the St Richard’s team turned up magically at five minutes past 12 to get her comfortable. Without that assistance it would have been a pretty dismal night. They sorted everything out, got her into the bed, made her comfortable, made her clean, I was completely taken aback by the unlimited nature of the care that was on offer.”
Hospice at Home team leader, Liza McEvilly explained, “We want to care for others like Ian and Wendy this Christmas. For some, our care means that their loved ones can have a break from being a carer and simply spend time being a husband, wife, son or daughter. For others, whose family can’t be with them, we offer companionship at a lonely time.
“Donations to the appeal will help us give all our patients in the community a comfortable and special Christmas, safe in the knowledge that our Hospice at Home team are here when they need them.”

St Richard’s Hospice Fundraising Manager, Rachel Jones, said the hospice was very grateful to Indy and Tom for volunteering their time and skills to create the film and looked forward to more collaborations with the University in the future.
St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with life-threatening illnesses and supports their families. Each year the hospice team supports over 2,600 patients and family members in Worcestershire with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
Patients are cared for in Day Hospice, the 17-bed In-patient Unit or in their own homes by a specialist professional team as well as many trained volunteers.
In the In-patient Unit, specialist staff are on hand 24 hours a day to manage patients’ symptoms and where, if appropriate, patients may spend the last few days of life in comfort and dignity. St Richard’s is an independent charity and is grateful for all donations to help it to continue its work.
