Giving is at the heart of everything we do here at St Richard’s.
We simply couldn’t give our care to patients and families free of charge without an amazing community of supporters who give to us.
Our Major Givers help fund the future of our care and support patients to live well as they celebrate all of life’s precious moments. You can support with a single gift or a regular donation.
We want your act of giving to be memorable and meaningful. By joining our Major Givers programme, you’ll have access to:
- a dedicated hospice contact
- regular updates and reports highlighting the transformative impact of your support
- an exclusive and unique annual appreciation event where you can hear from our patients and families about their experience of the care given by St Richard’s
Your kindness in action
We can help you tailor your gift to a specific area of our care, so it resonates with what most matters to you. You can choose to support three key services at St Richard’s:

In-patient Unit
Providing a home-from-home for inpatients while delivery expert palliative and end of life care.
Helping patients like Brian to live well and celebrate all of life’s moments until their last days.

Integrated Community Services
Providing hospice care at home, advice and guidance to patients and loved ones and supporting people live well to their last days.
Helping patients like Larry to remain in the comfort of his own home, making the most of every moment with wife Carole.

Family Support & Bereavement
Providing emotional care and support for people living with an illness that cannot be cured as well as their carers and loved ones, including children and teenagers.
Helping teenagers make new memories and meet others who are bereaved or living with a loved one whose illness cannot be cured.
Levels of giving
There are three levels of giving (bronze, silver and gold) and each one is recognised with a personalised leaf on the Giving Tree in the hospice reception. All leaves can be engraved with an individual or business name and include a short personal message.

Bronze
This commitment reflects a minimum £1000 donation as a one-off gift, £250 per quarter or £85 per month over one year.

Silver
This commitment reflects a minimum £3,000 donation as a one-off gift, £750 per quarter or £250 per month over one year.

Gold
The commitment reflects a minimum £5,000 donation as a one-off gift, £1250 per quarter or £450 per month over one year.
With your permission, your support will be recognised on a Major Givers website page using your name or a company name and logo.
If you wish to support St Richard’s care through your company, you may be able to deduct the value of the donation from the total business profits before tax.

Maximising what you give with Gift Aid
Your gift could be worth 25% more at no extra cost to you simply by adding Gift Aid. HMRC will add an extra 25p to every £1 on eligible gifts to St Richard’s Hospice.
For example, if a donor is a UK taxpayer and donates £3,000 we are able to claim 25% of this donation via Gift Aid. This creates an additional £750 at no extra cost to the donor. This means St Richard’s Hospice would receive a total of £3,750.
Claiming tax relief
If you are a higher rate or additional rate taxpayer, you can claim the difference between your tax rate and the basic rate on the net value of your donation after the inclusion of Gift Aid.
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, this means higher rate taxpayers can claim back 20% of the net donation, and additional rate taxpayers can claim back 25%.
For example, if you’re a higher rate taxpayer in England and you donate £8,000 and Gift Aid it, St Richard’s would receive £10,000 and you could claim £2,000 back – meaning the effective cost of your donation would be £6,000.
Corporation Tax
Qualifying charitable donations will obtain corporation tax relief if some very basic conditions are met. In summary, if a UK company donates to a registered UK charity, and there is no direct benefit to the donor, then a corporation tax deduction will be available.
Donating shares
Donating shares is a simple, tax-effective way to support St Richard’s Hospice. You won’t have to pay any Capital Gains Tax on the share you donate, and you can claim income tax relief too. When you donate shares to charity, they are a valuable source of income for us. We turn them into funds to power our care.
Shares worth under £1000
For donations of shares under £1000, you can give via ShareGift and nominate St Richard’s Hospice as your preferred charity. ShareGift is a charity specialising in accepting donations of shares.
Shares worth over £1000
For donations of shares over £1000, we work with a dedicated stockbroker to help you transfer your shares as easily and securely as possible. Please contact for more information.
Not only will you have the knowledge that your share gift has helped to provide care and comfort, you may also be entitled to relief from income tax and Capital Gains Tax on the value of your donation. For a gift of £1,000 worth of shares, the tax relief is calculated as the following:
- Basic-rate UK taxpayer (20%) – £250.00 of tax relief
- Higher-rate UK taxpayer (40%) – £666.66 of tax relief
- Additional-rate UK taxpayer (45%) – £818.18 of tax relief
- Non UK-taxpayer – No tax relief
The hospice receives the full £1,000 value of your gifted share donation.
To receive the tax relief you need to complete a tax return, also known as a self-assessment form. For further information, contact your financial adviser or tax office.
