Professor Richard Lewis

Richard was a Governor of St Richard’s Hospice from 1987 and Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2024.

He was appointed as a Consultant Physician with a specialist interest in respiratory medicine in Worcester in 1986, and an honorary Professor of Respiratory Medicine in 2003.

He chaired various St Richard’s Hospice committees including hospice services committees, and a strategy committee which produced a major strategic review in 2015.

This review led to the development of clinical services, and major changes to the hospice building—including the Living Well Centre and The Green—to enhance the space for therapeutic care and support.

Richard initiated and ran the clinic for end-of-life respiratory diseases at the hospice from 2012 to 2016. During the pandemic, he provided regular reports on COVID-19 for the hospice and also for both national and international teams working with COVID-19 throughout the pandemic.

A keen cyclist, Richard undertook two long distance fundraising cycle rides for St Richard’s—Land’s End to John O’Groats in 2006 and a tandem ride from Shetland to Spain in 2021 with his wife Anne, who is a retired local GP. Combined, these challenges raised almost £20,000 for St Richard’s.
