Volunteering at the hospice

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the first step?
  • The first step is to attend an Open Evening or virtual event to find out about us and to discuss where you could help.

  • Are there any age limits?
  • Volunteers are welcomed from age 16 to help in some areas such as shops, fundraising events and to help with administrative work. Volunteers who have contact with patients must be over 18 and there is no upper limit.

  • Are any special skills or qualifications needed?
  • Sometimes, we need support from volunteers with practical skills such as complementary therapy, hairdressing, gardening, IT, catering, and drivers with their own car.

But usually, all we ask is for volunteers to be empathetic, caring, enthusiastic, willing to learn, and with an interest in others.
  • Is training available?
  • The training provided is explained here: volunteer training.

  • How much time must I give?
  • The hospice is very flexible and so volunteers are able to give as they are able and according to the role they can fulfil. Some people give their time regularly each week and some are able to respond to occasional needs.

  • Is it possible to claim expenses?
  • There is a mileage allowance for those volunteers who use their own car on hospice business such as a volunteer driver or providing support in a patient’s home.
