Activity weekend supports bereaved families

Bereaved families were invited to an activity weekend supporting them with the loss of their loved ones.

The weekend was organised by the St Richard’s Hospice Family Support Team and saw three families take part in a variety of activities – both at the hospice and at Aztec Adventures in Upton Warren, near Droitwich.

The aim of the weekend was to support bereaved children and adults, helping them to explore their feelings and meet others in similar situations.

Rebecka Sparks, Specialist Palliative Care Social Worker, said: “The activity weekend allowed the families to spend time with each other, talking about the death of their loved and how they are feeling.

“When a loved one dies, it can be difficult for children – and adults – to make sense of the death and share their feelings.

“This is why group activities, such as those we arranged over the weekend, can be so beneficial as it offers families the opportunity to share their feelings in a safe space.”

During the weekend, the group of four adults and eight children were able to try their hand at bell boating and a ropes course at Aztec Adventures.

Families attending the activity weekend were those who have had a loved one cared for by St Richard’s Hospice or are receiving help from Bereavement Support South Worcestershire following a sudden or traumatic death.

The weekend was funded by Children in Need.
