‘Why I volunteer for St Richard’s Hospice’

To celebrate Volunteers’ Week, from June 1st to 7th, we are sharing stories from just a few of the fantastic people who give up their time to support St Richard’s Hospice.

Gavin Morris, a retired headteacher, began volunteering for St Richard’s Hospice at its Snowdrops shop in Broadway, after moving to the area.

He was inspired to volunteer for an hospice charity, after a former pupil, Joe, died of a life-limiting illness in 2015.

After volunteering at the shop, Mr Morris went on to train as a volunteer driver. He now brings Brian to the Men’s Space patient support group every Thursday.

After dropping Brian off at Men’s Space, Mr Morris stays with the group – giving out coffee and cake, and attending outings.

“Now I come and I don’t even think of them as unwell,” he said. “It is like a bloke’s youth club.

“Everybody just makes you feel as if what you’re doing matters. I think the team here are lovely people.

“Who knows when you or a member of your family might need it. That is what it’s about really – wanting to do something.”

An array of voluntary opportunities are available both at the hospice, in the community and at its shops and warehouse.
