Show vegetables donated to hospice

Prize vegetables shown at the Worcester Show have been transformed into delicious meals for patients at St Richard’s Hospice.

Members of the Worcester Allotment Forum displayed some of their finest produce in their ‘Vegetable Garden’ stand at the Worcester Show in Ghulevelt Park on Sunday 16th August. The group decided to donate the vegetables to the hospice so that patients could benefit from the locally grown produce.

The Worcester Allotment Forum represents gardeners from the 25 allotment sites across the city. This year, the Forum was invited to display vegetables grown on their members’ allotments, along with a display of recipes, photographs and interesting stories about allotment tenants. The group aimed to promote the local allotment community and invite other gardeners to take up vacant plots across the city.

A range of prize vegetables were donated to the hospice after the show, including different varieties of cabbages, marrows, courgettes, runner beans, tomatoes, squash and beetroot.

Pat Gething of the Worcester Allotment Forum said; “The Forum Committee agreed that the show produce should not be wasted and set out to find a worthy cause in the city. We are pleased that we have been able to donate the vegetables to St Richard’s Hospice for their kitchens.”

Kevin Ratcliffe, Head of Catering Services at St Richard’s Hospice, said; “We are very grateful to the Worcester Allotment Forum and all the gardeners who donated such lovely home grown produce to the hospice. The vegetables have enhanced our menus with interesting varieties not normally available to us, including mixed tomato salads, roasted marrow and a roasted squash and beetroot salad. Interesting and nutritious food is an important part of caring for patients who are feeling very unwell, and our patients attending Day Hospice enjoy the conviviality of sharing a delicious lunch.”
