Walk the Waterways Walk for hospice

An annual Waterways Walk taking in the magnificent River Severn and some of the county’s most popular cruising canals will take place on Sunday, 6 August.

The event – which is being organised by St Richard’s Hospice – is now in its eighth year.

Walkers have a choice of three distances, which are :

The Full Route – this circular route starts at Droitwich Spa Marina between 7am and 8am. A 21 mile walk for the more adventurous, it is mostly on towpaths and riverside footpaths; taking walkers through the beautiful scenery and open countryside of Worcestershire, it will pass 41 locks along the Droitwich Canal to the River Severn and back along the Worcester to Birmingham Canal.  The halfway point will be at The Anchor Inn, Diglis, a perfect stop for the weary walker;

The Midi Route – this one way, 11 mile, 3 hour route starts at The Anchor Inn, Diglis, between 10.30am and 11.30am. The halfway point is at Tibberton and the finish is at The Eagle and Sun pub in Hanbury Wharf;

The Mini Route – this circular 6 mile route starts between 10.30am and 11am at Perdiswell Sports Centre in Worcester and encompasses Northwick, Pitchcroft, Diglis and back along the Worcester to Birmingham canal through Sidbury to Perdiswell. A family friendly route, pushchairs and under 12 years are welcome.

The full and mid routes are not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Children under 12 can take part in the midi and mini routes.  All routes are dog friendly and no map reading skills are required.

There is a registration fee of £10 for walkers over 16 years and £5 for walkers under 16 years with registrations closing at midnight on Monday 31 July.

Last year 300 walkers took part in the walks, raising an impressive £19,158, which went towards caring for our patients and their loved ones.

Alison Parkes, Senior Fundraiser at St Richard’s Hospice said, “This is always a popular event in the hospice calendar.  This year we are hoping to beat our record number of registrations we received in 2016 and are looking forward to a great day with a fantastic team of walkers and volunteers.”

The Waterways Walk is sponsored again this year by Droitwich Spa Marina.
