I decided I wanted to become a nurse when I was 16. I had a job as a health care assistant in a nursing home and I felt this was my calling. I have worked for many years as a community nurse now and have recently joined the community team at St Richard’s Hospice. I work as a staff nurse, supporting the clinical nurse specialists.
My role is varied, with no two days the same. I visit patients and families in their homes, attend patient centred meetings, refer to other services on our patients behalf and communicate any changes to the responsible clinical nurse specialist. I cover a large geographical area and this adds to the diversity of my job.
Working as a hospice nurse is sometimes tough, it can be challenging, but it’s also hugely rewarding. I am constantly amazed at the strength and courage of people that meet along this journey of life.
